Meet Ellie

We are fostering Ellie for Illinois English Bulldog Rescue.

We will post updates on her via Facebook, but thought a blog page may make it easier to keep up on her progress.
She will have a LONG road to recovery. Any help you can make to her care is MUCH appreciated.

To make a donation, please visit Illinois English Bulldog Rescue and click the "Donate" tab.
Ellie also has a "wish list" on amazon, where items can be shipped directly to her foster home.

Ellie will be available for adoption to approved applicants once she is emotionally ready and medically cleared.

Follow IEBR on Facebook too!

"Emergency Intake this evening!! We got a call from one of the shelters we work with regarding this lady who needed immediate release due to medical reasons. We were told she is 1-2 years old and very sick. Our volunteers rushed to get her and rushed her to the vet. She has a very deep hematoma on her ear that is split open, bite wounds on all four of her legs and she is a very, very sick little girl.
Picture

Her rescuers have named her Ellie....

Ellie is spending the night on antibiotic fluids and the surgeon has been called in. The vets are worried about sepsis. The pinna (part of the ear) is torn very deep and they said from the ooze she may be resistant to a lot of antibiotics. They may have to do a pinnectomy. Dual ear infections and finding out the severity of that will tell canal issues. Her left front leg is swollen also, either due to healing from an old wound or abscess. Tonight, they will sedate Ellie, clean out her ear, do xrays of her leg, trim her ear, start the antibiotics, culture the wound, and evaluate again tomorrow.

Ellie is very sick. She is very tired. Please pray and send her lots of love. Her care is going to be very expensive. The deposit alone from tonight is $1500. Can you help with her care?
No amount is too small. Ellie deserves this fighting chance. Please go to: www.ilenglishbulldogrescue.org and click on the donate tab."

**Attention! Ellie has a message!!**
Hello, Friends! I get to go home later today! Look, they got rid of the icky part of my ear. I got some good morning kisses from the nice ladies at IEBR and as soon as doc says its ok, I get to go. Because I'm so stressed, the dogtors will not do a full exam just yet. They want me home to decompress. I'll be on antibiotics and pain meds for 4-5 days and then my dogtors will reevaluate. They said I've got a long road to recovery. If you would like to donate to my care, no amount is too small. Please go to: www.ilenglishbulldogrescue.org and click on the donate tab. Stay tuned for updates.

Love,
Ellie

No I wasn't trying to sneakily rub my mangled ear on the couch. No idea where all that blood came from. -Ellie

Ellie has many wounds all over her delicate body. Scrapes, claw marks, and bite wounds. She's not as fearful as she was when she first arrived at the ER. ER staff said that with any noise, she darted back into her kennel for safety. Now she's a bit more willing to explore her environment and had no trouble hopping up on the couch! She was pleased with that discovery.

Who doesn't like peanut butter?!?! Apparently Ellie that's who! We could use donations of Pill Pockets for this sweet girl. She'll be on antibiotics and pain medicine for quite some time.

Please visit "Ellie's Wish List" on Amazon to ship supplies directly to her! Thank you!

Ellie is still a little fearful, especially when asking her to come out from her crate or come to you... she's probably still afraid of what she's going to be made to do. But she's making major strides.... She's becoming more trusting every day! Baby Steps, lots of praise, and lots of her favorite Grandma Lucy treats!
Let's hear it for Craig and Gail Duy! Saved the day sending us some pill pockets! Just in the knick of time for evening meds!!!! wohooo!!! Thank you!!!

WOW! Thank you so much everyone who has donated for Ellie and sent her supplies from our Amazon wishlist! Your outpouring of love is incredible! This beautiful little girl has probably never felt so much love before! Thank you Thank you Thank you!

Ellie had an amazing weekend! She even *almost* engaged in play with the other dogs! It was pretty exciting! She's still unsure but you can see her starting to come out of her shell now!
Thank you Meghan, Adam, & Olivia for my new blankie, duck, and cookies! I'm using my ducky as a pillow tonight!

June 26, 2017 - 11am - Vet Visit

Ellie had a follow up appointment with Dr Pearson today.
Picture
Dr P even brought her a gift! It was so thoughtful.
And Ellie actually seemed interested in the toy! That was the first time she's done that!

Thank goodness we took the Grandma Lucy treats with us to the vet- that is the ONLY treat she'll eat at this point. She loves them! So thank you to everyone who has sent them to her! We'll definitely be going through them fast making every experience as positive as possible!

The vet was unable to get a culture of her ear in the room with me. She was being so good and trusting, but then when we so much as looked at that mangled ear, she freaked out! So I gave the OK to sedate her, so that they could assess it better and get her the treatment she needs. So they took her in the back and sedated her. They were able to get a good look at what was going on....
Picture

So part of me wants to wait and give an update after we get the culture back. There's a lot of unknowns right now. But I know people are anxious to hear what's happening with this darling girl. And I believe she needs all the positive thoughts, reiki, & prayer she can get right now... So here's the scoop...

So we are still waiting for the first culture to come back from her ER visit last week. It should be back by Wednesday. Dr P swabbed the ear both on the inner ear and the outer wounded part. The left ear looks much better, so we will continue to administer drops at home. The right ear is difficult to get meds in, so they administered a treatment in clinic that will last 2 weeks and I don't have to traumatize her at home trying to get the meds in it. Although inflamed, the wounded part of the ear did not show any bacteria. Which is very odd. The next step is likely a biopsy. We decided to hold off on that until we have the culture back....we will need to put her fully under to remove a larger section to biopsy. One possible scenario, is that it's actually squamous cell carcinoma. Either way, there's a large possibility that the ear will need to be amputated.
So, long story short, we are waiting to see what the ear culture shows and then we will go from there. Please send lots of good thoughts her way! We will update as soon as we hear the results of the culture.
Oh and we also got a script for Lidocaine to numb that ear up! Hopefully that will bring her some relief so she won't shake it or scratch it so much and further damage it!

Although still really dopey from being sedated, we stopped for a Puppucino on the way home.
Starbucks makes everything better, right? :)

I'm not sure... is she content?!?!

Thank you Janet and Angela for the heartbeat puppies ! She has one for each crate (upstairs at night and downstairs during the day) and we'll be taking one with us to vet visits to comfort her

Thank you everyone to continue to support this amazing little girl. We have a lot of thank you's to send out! She's eating better thanks to the canned food, fish oil, and bone broth! #EllieIEBR.

June 30, 2017

Today is my foster brother Charles' 3rd birthday. Him and the blonde lady went to Florida for the weekend for some rescue event, so I'm chilling with my other foster mom and my foster grandparents. I've learned that grandparents spoil you rotten and let you do anything you want and eat anything you want. I like grandparents. I wonder if my forever home will have any couple grandparents around...

I used to hate this annoying puppy. I would growl at her everytime she came by me. We bonded over the whole grandparent loving thing this weekend. I guess she's ok. She's kinda fun sometimes. A little dopey. Kinda clumsy. Not too bright.

We're still waiting for that darn ear culture to come back. We've called and the lab is still processing it. I know I know. We're just as anxious as you are. So medically we don't really have an update yet. Most bacteria can be seen in the culture in just a few days, but some types can take 10 days or longer to show up. I'm concerned that it's taking so long, that it means something is in fact growing and they're observing it. I will continue to follow up with them until we get the results back.

But emotionally she's really making a lot of progress.

She wants to play but is still a little timid. She did do a little snarling over a toy the other day, and again over affection from her foster mom. She is quickly realizing that doesn't get her what she wants though. If she does that, the toy/attention goes away. She's young and eager to please, so it shouldn't be difficult for her to realize the concept of sharing. She makes more and more progress each day  :)

We do have some bad news for any cats who were wanting to put in an adoption application. Ellie is not really a "cat kinda dog". She's made it pretty clear to Frankie and Luigi that she does not enjoy their company. We were hoping she would come around, but it does appear she has a pretty high prey drive and likes to chase fast moving things. (She also discovered a mouse outside as we were doing yardwork and took off like a hunting dog). We're thinking she may do better in a home with relatively bigger dogs (ie, no Chihuahuas, cats, ferrets, etc). But it's still early in the rehab game and who knows where her progress will take her.

Thank you for your continued support!

Thank you Miss Dina for the blanket and treats!  And thank you Miss Heather for the toys!!!
We received some other items, but they did not have a note so we don't know who to properly thank!!! Miss Monica I think some of the cookies are from you.... thank you!!!

Ella continues to do really well emotionally. She's learning to share toys and play more with the other dogs. She's still fearful when you approach her too quickly or reach out to grab her collar. We're working on building up enough trust for her to come when called.

Miss Ellie has a vet appointment tomorrow to discuss the results of hear ear culture. We have some follow up questions for the ER vet that performed the culture. Hopefully we have some answers from them tomorrow because hr ear is still not healing!  The vet said they may need a biopsy at this point to get a better idea of what's going on.

Congratulations to Miss Bella on her new Furever Home!!!

Not only did IEBR adoptabull dog  Bella win the jackpot of furever homes this week, her new parents gave an additional donation to help with MY care!!!! WOW!!! So thoughtful!!!! Thank you so much and congrats to Miss Bella!!!! I Can't wait until I'm read to find my furever home!!!!!

Rescue volunteer Karen is taking Miss Ellie to the vet today. Her appointment isn’t until this afternoon, so in the meantime Ellie gets to spend the day fighting crime at the Indianapolis Metro Police Dept.

So far, there’s been a lot less excitement (and far less donuts) than expected.
Well the day sure shaped up! Pupacinos and donuts! I knew this is what cops did all day! -Ellie

Fun's over and we're at the vet....but she brought me a prezzie again! cookies! Yum!

Vet report coming tomorrow....

Don't forget about our fundraiser, going on through July!
Thank you!

A big thank you to Karen and Angel for taking Ellie to the vet today while I was at work! She had a blast but sure is pooped!!!! She'll sleep good tonight!

Vet Report

Let's start with the good news - the infection in the ear canals are cleared up. But Ellie's vet is concerned because the antibiotics she was on should have cleared up the ear wound based on the culture results. Her left ear is more swollen and still has a lot of puss in the wound. Dr. P would like to put her under, clean up the wound/ear in order to find out what is going on. The best scenario is that it's persistent inflammation...if cleaning it up doesn't help it heal than amputation would probably be the best course. But it also depends on what is going on with the ear canal. Doing a biopsy while she is under is a very good possibility. She feels there is a good chance of a secondary issue going on. We just have to figure out what that is.

More good news - as of now nothing seems bacterial.... so while Ellie is under they can spay, correct her soft palet, and possibly widen her nares a bit. That being said - her surgery is scheduled for 2 weeks from now.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to help this angel!!!

I have to do lots of unpleasant and kinda scary things right now in order to get better … vet visits, ear cleaning, meds, just learning how to be a family dog again. Cookies definitely help make things better! Thank you Miss Robin!
There was no note with this package, but I think they're from Miss Monica! thank you!!

July 18, 2017

My foster mom saw this online and asked my vet if she thought it would help me! Dr P thought it was worth a try, so it's ordered and on it's way!  Thank you Miss Jodi for your donation...it will help cover the cost of this product!!!!!
paws crossed it helps my gross mangled ear heal!!!

July 19, 2017 Update from foster mom:  After I ordered one of these bad boys,  I got a confirmation email. In the confirmation email they asked how we heard about their company and to share why we ordered. I shared Ellie's story with them this morning and within a couple hours was notified that I received a complete refund of my order ....
"because it was for a good cause." WOW!! I'm so amazed at the generosity of people.
We also got the product already!! And so far, this seems like a home run for her specific issue! It keeps her from scratching / rubbing it, it keeps the puppy from licking it 😝, and it keeps it protected from dirt and other contaminants, while allowing it to breathe.

July 21, 2017

I wouldn't say this is bad news - but it's not "good" news either.
Being a girl just isn't easy sometimes- Miss Ellie just started her heat cycle!
Unfortunately this means her spay, soft palate surgery, and ear biopsy surgery is postponed until end of August.

Ellie says if you need her this month, she'll be on the couch, crying over Lifetime Movies and eating dog biscuits. Someone send Kleenex and Midol.

Ellie helped out with a home visit for Illinois English Bulldog Rescue tonight. She scoped out the yard to find the best potty spot. She tested out every dog bed to make sure they met bulldog standards. And she let the resident dog sniff her out. She gave the home four paws up. But boy was that a lot of work! She napped the whole way home! :)

Ellie went to a birthday party today! Her foster sister turned 12, so they celebrated with an ice cream party! Complete with puppy friendly toppings - bananas, strawberries, pumpkin, coconut, and pineapple (and a little whipped cream of course!!!) Ellie was not sure of all the festivities - she was particularly nervous of the whipped cream can - so she was given a quiet spot on the outskirts to eat her sundae, which she LOVED! Ellie says she can get used to this "Party" thing!
